A Brief History of the CheckPoint Sensor Technology

CEO Bob Yuan and Chief of Engineering Jim Orton at NASA JSC

We originally looked at some wired systems and found them unworkable as our laboratories are spread out over almost the entire facility and the data cabling and labor to hook up each separate unit would be extremely expensive. Our freezers store historical and irreplaceable astronaut flight samples and valuable NASA research materials so that it was critical that the system be reliable, responsive and can be easily calibrated to meet our NASA requirements.

The Bioastronautics Contract selected the CheckPoint wireless system and we deployed over two hundred sensors to monitor Ultra Low freezers (-80C), refrigerators, room humidity and CO2 levels in several buildings across the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

During our first year of operation in 2006, we collected data and made sure all of the hardware and software was stable. In the second year we performed validation on all sensors and replaced all probes with calibrated "Snap-Cal" probes provided under the CheckPoint re-calibration exchange program. The system has since been in use as both a calibrated system gathering quality data and an alert notification system.

We are very satisfied with the system and we continue to expand the system by adding more new sensors of various types. We have an extremely challenging environment for a wireless system to operate in. The folks at Checkpoint have made many modifications to their existing hardware to accommodate our unique requirements. I believe the biggest challenges have been in integrating the JSC network to route the Checkpoint data from the numerous buildings to our main Checkpoint server and in how we receive our email alert notifications. We have very strict requirements for wireless devices here, especially in the Mission Control building, and are pleased we have not experienced any interference due to any of the Checkpoint hardware.

The staff at CheckPoint/ TempSys have been prompt at returning e-mails, they were thorough with our installation, and continue to help us with solutions to fine tune what we have turned into a quite complex and full featured monitoring system.

I completed the 2011 year-end CheckPoint report and we had an outstanding year. We set new records for alert reductions by adjusting the equipment settings, upgrading refrigerators and user training. Our new PM program and continued proactive approach is paying off.

In August we had 10.7 alerts per day, September 10.3 and in December we reduced the alerts to only 7.8 alerts per day! That's only 3 temperature alerts per 8 hour shift out of 641 appliances monitored by CheckPoint. CheckPoint has really become an invaluable tool for our hospital and allowed us to provide the safest possible food and medication storage to the most important people in the world-our kid's.

We certainly plan to expand our CheckPoint Program with the addition of our new 10-story East Tower
and the new South Super Center. I believe we will exceed 1,000 CheckPoint sensors in the next few years. Please feel free to use me as a reference for any company looking for the BEST monitoring
system in the world.

I want to commend your installation team for their work here at Christiana. They are very professional, competent, and a pleasure to work with. They quickly and efficiently installed the sensors and repeaters, and knew exactly what they needed to do to resolve issues when signals were not received or probes not seen. In any case, all of the CCHS staff who interacted with them was impressed.
